Lion Air Plane Crashes and Breaks Apart in Waters of Bali

Lion Air Crashed Landing in the Water

From BBC Indonesia:

Lion Air Plane Crashes in the Waters of Bali

A Lion Air plane crashed in the waters near Ngurah Rai Airport in Denpasar, Bali, prior to its anticipated arrival time last Saturday around 3 pm. The Boeing 737-800 NG aircraft was reported to have approached the airport runway but fell short into the water, which caused its fuselage to break into two.

Airport authorities have ensured that all 101 passengers and 7 crew are in safe condition despite some injuries.

The Ngurah Rai airport was closed for about an hour following the accident in order to facilitate the evacuation process.

SAR Team Evacuating Passengers

It is unknown at this time what caused the plane to crash before landing.

“Chronologically, the plane was landing but it failed to reach the runway and fell into the open water which was about 50 meters before the landing runway. Judging from the distance, the fuselage broke upon impact with the water,” said General Director of Civil Aviation, Herry Bakti Gumay, when contacted by phone.

The Boeing 737-800 NG aircraft used by Lion Air was a new aircraft used by the airline since 2012. Lion Air recently bought hundreds of new planes from Airbus.

Irfandrocha:

I’m afraid of being on an airplane now…. Sigh.

irzanasalam:

If this incident was caused by microburst then why was there no warning from the ATC [Air Traffic Controller]? =(

Microburst in Theory

Cns.sharingan:

I think this accident was caused by poor piloting skill, Boss

Klaprofeat:

There was another theory that this accident was caused by a cellphone signal being activated prior to the plane landing…

Msirawe:

Perhaps the pilot was thinking about President SBY’s new Twitter account. LOL…

Mr Reinhard007:

There was a rumor that a passenger overheard the stewardess saying “This is what would happen if a plane was forced to fly [under bad circumstances]” !

Abunay777:

Just pray first before you board a plane next time. =) Hopefully, this incident won’t happen again to any Indonesia airline. Amen!!

Msirawe:

Yes, hopefully this accident is not caused by human error. Even though the cause of this accident is still unknown, Lion Air is already blacklisted in Europe. Hehe…

Meonghell:

Gosh, this airline is always in trouble all the time. =(

Other Airlines Landed Safely in Airport

RomanAbramovich:

I think this accident might be due to fuel shortage. As the plane was about to land, it crashed into the water because there was no more fuel!

Topengbaldwin:

I think the pilot was sleepy, Boss. Haha.

Decy:

I’m usually not worried if I use other airlines. However, taking Lion Air is frightening as it has bad flight records, which is why it was blacklisted to fly to Europe. There are also frequent flight delays which will cause passengers to waste many hours…

What’s the worst problem you’ve encountered on an airplane? Any experience a plane crash before?
