From Kompas:

President: Indonesia will become an Asian Tiger in 5 Years

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said Indonesia will soon become an Asian Tiger country in five years. In addition to an economy that continues to grow positively in the midst of the Eurozone crisis, Indonesia also continues to actively conduct foreign policy. The dream and hope of the founding father of Indonesia, Soekarno, to be the Tiger of Asia will become reality soon.

“We also need to improve our defense systems by developing more advanced weapons and defense industries,” said the President after overseeing the meeting of the defense department at TNI headquarters in Cilangkap, Jakarta on Thursday (August 9, 2012).

The head of the state said, Indonesia’s defense budget continued to increase. In 2004, the defense department’s spending reached Rp 21.07 trillion. In 2009 and 2012, the budget was increased to Rp 33.67 trillion and Rp 72.54 [~7.6 billion USD] trillion respectively. “If God’s willing then hopefully in 2013 it will reach about Rp 77 trillion. This is a very significant increase,” he said.

Regarding the increases in Indonesia’s defense budget, the Head of State asked that certain countries, including neighboring countries, to not worry. This [defense] modernization budget was solely to protect the sovereignty and integrity of the Republic of Indonesia. “Indonesia also hasn’t upgraded its defense system for a while. Thus Indonesia is not an aggressor,” he said.

Modernization is also considered important in terms of expanding the military operations for reasons other than war, such as disaster management and combating terrorism.

Yes indeed … but it’s a toothless Asian tiger, boss hahahaha….

Kamen-x:

It’d be a baby Asian Tiger, boss! Hehehehe…

Elhubby:

It’s useless if we have a strong military but have no guts! =(

kaskuserHQ:

Be careful, Sir! Otherwise, the budget will be corrupted again like before.

Ojuno:

Yes Sir, of course!
As long as you’re not in charge anymore then I will certainly believe it.

Hendunante:

In Asia there are:
China, India, Pakistan and North Korea which have nuclear weapons.
Japan and South Korea with their advanced weapon systems.
Vietnam which has way more sophisticated weapons compared to Indonesia.
Singapore which is just a small country but has much more modern weaponry compared to Indonesia.

So, on which part of Asia would Indonesia be the Asian Tiger?

zedmorna:

I think Mr. BeYe [the President’s nickname] means the Asian Cat! =)

Freddy.Mercury:

You should eradicate the corruption first at the root.
How is it possible to be a Tiger otherwise?

Chaosborn:

If Indonesia were to become an Asian Tiger in the next 5 years then probably other countries will already have become Dragons! Hahahaha….

Sisin:

Can a water buffalo become a tiger in the next 5 years?
Wow, it will look like a genetic mutation then! Hahaha….

3670200:

You also said same thing in the past but in the end, nothing ever happens! =(

Pabrik.BH:

President: Indonesia will become an Asian Tiger in 500 Years.
Now, it’s CORRECT!

cptdrake:

Does he [the President] mean when he’s no longer the president anymore then the country will make progress?

Benny92:

Sorry Sir, I don’t intend to make fun of you but prove it first instead of just saying it!

Fouren6:

Gosh, hopefully SBY’s [President’s nickname] wish will come true!

Jingtot:

There will be another statement like this again in 5 years. =)

dwipuji25:

I believe you, Sir! I believe that Indonesia will become the Asian Tiger in corruption.

What do you think? Is Indonesia poised to become a powerful Asian economy and country?
