Children at Samuel Orphanage Sleep in Dog Cages
The children from Samuel Children Orphanage, Gading Serpong, Tangerang, Banten, admitted to having suffered various abuse while living in the home that has been operating since 2001. One child even said he was once forced to sleep in an animal’s cage.
“Yes, I’ve slept in a dog cage,” said one foster child, J, 9 years old, when Tempo met him at Mawar Saron Legal Aid, Sunter, North Jakarta, on Monday, 24 February 2014.
Samuel Orphanage is currently in the public spotlight due to the escape of many foster children. Those who have run away say they weren’t welcome to stay there because they were often hurt, fed stale food and beaten.
J, one of the children who escaped, said he was forced to sleep in a dog cage for trying to run away several times. He had to sleep in the cage overnight. According to J, the cage he slept in had 6 dogs inside. “Those dogs are local mutts,” said J, who was dressed in shorts and red socks.
According to J, he was beaten and not fed in addition to his confinement. He was once hit with a buckle on his neck, back, and arms. “I was only released in the morning, but was not given any meals for the day” explained J.
